It is a lot of work.i had a donor car with a tdi engine,but if you pick the 97 passat,it will be also good as it is same platform.
@lettuce did a b8 to b8.5 engine swap: Eventually the timing assembly was making some noise, and he decided he wanted to install a brand. Canbus is not an issue to swap if you have the complete wiring harness from a donor car and you have some skills and lots of patience.
